Inspired by the Galla Placidia, a 5th century Italian mausoleum, the area is covered floor to ceiling with mosaics comprised of more than a million 1 inch square semitransparent glass tiles. The glass tiles are filled up with orange and blue dyes, with some having an extra decoration of gold leaf applique. Critters that were design components in Roman baths, although the ceiling mosaic is a night sky are depicted by the mosaics on the marble walls. For this pool’s designer Julia Morgan’s sanity, the construction of this Roman Pool took to assemble, just over half of the 12 years it took to finish the redesigned and rebuilt Neptune Pool.
